Outdoor kitchen cost guide · Reviewed October 19, 2026

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?

For early U.S. planning, use roughly $5,000–$18,000 for a focused grill island, $13,000–$35,000 for a complete custom kitchen, and $40,000–$95,000+ for a covered outdoor room. Utilities, weather protection, and site work can matter as much as the appliances.

Fast rule: Price five layers separately: equipment, enclosure, counters, utilities, and weather protection.

Complete outdoor kitchen planning ranges

Project pathPlanning rangeTypical scope
Focused grill island$5,000–$18,000Grill, modest cabinet and counter run, limited utility work, existing patio
Complete custom kitchen$13,000–$35,000Multiple appliances, weather-rated storage, counters, utility extensions, professional installation
Covered outdoor room$40,000–$95,000+Premium appliances, larger layout, roof, lighting, extensive utilities, surfaces, dining and finish work

Ranges overlap because scope varies. Major patio work, long utility runs, retaining, premium structures, unusual access, and high-end equipment can push totals higher.

Build the budget in five layers

  1. Equipment. Grill, side burner, refrigeration, sink, ice, ventilation, storage accessories, and freestanding cooking equipment.
  2. Enclosure. Combustible or noncombustible framing, weather-rated cabinets, access panels, appliance liners, and service clearances.
  3. Counters and finish. Counter material, fabrication, backsplash, edges, cutouts, support, sealing, and repair risk.
  4. Utilities. Gas or fuel storage, electrical circuits and outlets, water, drainage, shutoffs, trenching, permits, and inspections.
  5. Weather and site. Patio, roof, ventilation, lighting, drainage, access, winterization, furniture clearances, and contingency.

Utilities should be planned before the patio is finished

Natural gas, propane, water, drainage, refrigeration, outlets, lighting, and electric cooking each create routing and service requirements. Confirm appliance specifications before rough-in. A future sink or ice maker may change trenching, shutoff, drain, and winterization needs even if the appliance is bought later.

Safety checkpoint

Combustible construction, grill clearances, ventilation, overhead cover, fuel storage, and appliance liners must be resolved as one system using the exact manufacturer instructions and local requirements.

What changes the cost most?

Layout and equipment

Longer runs, corners, islands, seating overhangs, premium grills, refrigeration, sinks, and specialty equipment add material and coordination.

Infrastructure

Long utility routes, finished surfaces, electrical capacity, drainage, roof ventilation, permits, and difficult access can dominate the site budget.

Cost per linear foot can be a rough sense check, but it hides equipment density and infrastructure. A compact island with premium appliances can cost more than a longer basic run.

Backyard Shortlist organizes broad current project-cost guidance into the layers that must exist for normal use. The ranges are planning allowances, not bids. Verify exact appliance requirements, code, weather suitability, and local labor before construction.
