Research center · hot tubs

Choose the hot tub around how you’ll use it.

A useful comparison starts with the seats you’ll actually use, the electrical service the model needs, whether it fits your route and base, and who will service it. Build a complete project allowance below, including ongoing ownership costs.

01 · Choose the ownership path

Compare the tradeoffs before comparing the jets.

01

Inflatable or seasonal

Lower commitment and easier storage can suit occasional use. Compare insulation, actual user space, cover quality, winter limits, repair support, and the life you expect from the unit.

Ask: What temperatures and outdoor conditions does the exact model support?

02

Compact plug-in or convertible

Some rigid models offer a 115/120V connection, a 230/240V conversion path, or both. A plug-in option can simplify the installation, while the model’s heater output and use conditions still matter.

Ask: Is this exact unit dedicated-circuit plug-in, convertible, or hardwired—and what changes when converted?

03

Dedicated hardwired spa

Many full-size models use a dedicated hardwired circuit. The model, amperage, heater, distance from the panel, and local code determine the installation—not a generic 220V rule.

Ask: Have the electrician and dealer confirm the specific wiring diagram, GFCI, circuit, and panel capacity.

Electrical work belongs with a qualified, licensed electrician under applicable local code. Never choose wiring or circuit sizing from a general buying guide. The exact manufacturer manual and local authority control.

Price figures are manufacturer-published U.S. examples checked Oct. 19, 2026; the Jacuzzi J-215 band comes from Jacuzzi’s published model cost guide, while Stride is a displayed MSRP. They are product-price references, not competing installed quotes. Taxes, options, delivery, setup, electrical work, and location can change the total.

03 · Plan the site before delivery

Four checks that prevent an expensive mismatch.

01

Base & full load

Record dry weight, water capacity, occupant count, and the maker’s filled-weight figure. Confirm that the base is level and approved for the model. Have a qualified structural professional assess elevated decks; don’t use a generic pounds-per-square-foot shortcut.

02

Route & placement

Measure gates, corners, overhead obstructions, slopes, soft ground, and the actual unit dimensions in the delivery orientation. Ask whether the dealer provides placement, what is excluded, and when a crane or spa mover is needed.

03

Service & water access

Keep the equipment panel, cover lifter, steps, and safe entry clear. Plan drainage and a practical refill route. If the spa is partly or fully recessed, ask how every service panel will remain accessible.

04

Local approvals & privacy

Check property boundaries, setbacks, easements, permits, HOA rules where applicable, barriers or safety requirements, and any rules for an elevated deck. Requirements vary by place and installation.

Manufacturer pre-delivery instructions, exact owner’s manual, written dealer scope, local building department, and qualified electrician take precedence over general guidance.

04 · Budget the ownership, too

Five-year cost is more than the tub.

Use actual bids or estimates for freight, unloading, crane placement, base, electrical, permits, privacy, and accessories. For energy, ask the dealer for the model’s documented consumption under a stated test method and climate; then adjust for your temperature, cover, exposure, and use.

  • Ask how often water, filters, and sanitizer need attention.
  • Compare cover replacement, parts, labor, and service-call costs.
  • Check whether the warranty requires authorized installation or service.
  • Model the monthly electric bill separately from the upfront project quote.

Research notes

What these examples do—and don’t—tell you.

Primary source first

Specifications and public prices link to manufacturer pages. Those are snapshots and may change.

Not comfort testing

Seat count is not a comfort score. Test the seats, footwell, depth, entry, and lounge fit in person if possible.

No universal wiring answer

Voltage, amperage, GFCI, dedicated circuits, heater behavior, and approved conversion depend on the exact model and local code.

No quote is a guess

The calculator only totals values you enter. It does not invent local installation prices or promise energy use.
