Patio cost guide · Reviewed October 19, 2026

How much does a patio cost in 2026?

Published U.S. guidance commonly spans roughly $5–$40 per square foot, but a responsible total also includes demolition, excavation, base, drainage, access, edge work, steps, sealing, and contingency. For early project planning, use $3,000–$9,000 for a compact surface, $9,000–$25,000 for a primary outdoor-living patio, and $25,000–$60,000+ for premium or multi-zone work.

Fast rule: Area × finish price is only a surface estimate. The ground underneath often decides whether the patio lasts.

Patio project planning ranges

Project shapePlanning rangeTypical scope
Compact surface$3,000–$9,000Small seating or grill pad, straightforward access, limited demolition and drainage
Primary living patio$9,000–$25,000Dining/lounge area, stronger base scope, edges, steps or drainage details
Premium or multi-zone$25,000–$60,000+Large area, premium material, patterns, walls, grading, drainage, difficult access or several activity zones

Square-foot rates and total ranges are broad. Soil, freeze-thaw exposure, slope, demolition, disposal, access, retaining, drainage, material, pattern, and regional labor all matter.

A more complete patio budget formula

Area with waste + demolition + excavation + base + surface installation + edges/steps + drainage + access + finish details + contingency.

  1. Measure activity zones. Dining, cooking, lounge, fire, wellness equipment, and paths each need usable clearances.
  2. Add waste intentionally. Pattern, cuts, breakage, and material format change the quantity.
  3. Describe the base. Excavation depth, compacted layers, reinforcement, joints, and drainage should be visible in the quote.
  4. Price access. Hand-carry distance, machine width, gates, stairs, occupied homes, and landscape protection affect labor.
  5. Protect contingency. Unknown soil, buried conditions, water movement, and repair work should not consume the furniture budget.

Material changes more than appearance

Concrete

Efficient for larger simple areas. Finish, reinforcement, joints, access for placement, cracking expectations, and repair visibility matter.

Pavers or stone

Offer modular repair and more patterns. Material thickness, bedding, edge restraint, cuts, base, and premium stone selection can raise labor.

Ask how the material performs under the actual use: hot tub loads, outdoor kitchen equipment, freeze-thaw cycles, deicing exposure, grease, fire features, tree roots, and drainage.

The biggest cost drivers

Sequence test

If a future hot tub, pergola, kitchen, gas line, or electrical trench crosses this patio, coordinate it before the finished surface is installed.

How this guide was built

Backyard Shortlist uses broad current U.S. project-cost guidance and a bottom-up scope method. The calculator keeps demolition, access, drainage, base, edge work, and contingency visible so a surface price is not mistaken for a complete proposal.
