Pergola types: choose the weather behavior first

A pergola can create filtered shade, controllable exposure, or near-roof protection. Decide what the structure must do in sun, rain, wind and winter before comparing accessories.

Do not compare category names alone. “Pergola” can mean an open wood frame, a manual louver kit, a motorized aluminum system, or a larger engineered outdoor room.

Open frame, fixed roof, or louvered roof?

SystemStrongest useMain advantageMain tradeoff
Open slats / raftersArchitectural definition and filtered shadeSimple, airy, fewer moving partsLimited rain protection; shade changes with sun angle
Fixed solid roofConsistent cover and protected furniturePredictable rain and sun protectionPermanent shade, heat buildup, larger building/permit implications
Manual louversAdjustable shade without powered controlsControl with fewer electrical/service needsManual operation and mechanical upkeep remain
Motorized louversFrequent adjustment and integrated outdoor-room useConvenience, sensors and accessory integrationPower, controls, seals, motors and long-term service matter

Manual or motorized louvers?

Manual louvers are compelling when the structure is reachable, adjustment is occasional, and simplicity matters more than automation. Ask how the operating mechanism locks, how water behaves at intermediate angles, and which parts can be replaced.

Motorization makes sense when homeowners will adjust the roof frequently or integrate rain sensors, lights, shades, fans or heaters. The quote should identify power routing, control location, motor and electronics warranty, sensor behavior, manual override, drainage maintenance, and who provides service locally. A long structure warranty is not necessarily the same as long motor or finish coverage.

Wood or aluminum?

Wood

Warm, adaptable, familiar

  • Can relate naturally to decks and traditional homes.
  • Easy to customize in the field.
  • Finish and movement require ongoing attention.
  • Large clear spans may require substantial members.
  • Compare species, treatment, fasteners and maintenance.
Aluminum

Precise, low-maintenance, system-led

  • Common for integrated louvers and concealed drainage.
  • Finish quality and warranty are major comparison points.
  • Field modification may be limited.
  • Engineering is configuration-specific.
  • Serviceable parts and installer network matter.

Read ratings as configuration-specific evidence

Wind and snow claims should match the exact size, post layout, attachment, louver state, foundation and installation method being proposed. Ask for the document that applies to the quoted configuration and address. Marketing language about a product family is not a substitute for site-specific engineering or local approval.

For rain, trace the entire water path: louvers or roof surface, perimeter gutter, post channel, outlet, splash point and final drainage. Confirm whether downspout exits can be oriented for the site and whether freezing, leaves or insects affect maintenance.

What a complete pergola quote should name

  1. Exact dimensions and configuration: outside dimensions, clear interior, post positions and roof height.
  2. Site attachment: footing design, slab suitability, house attachment, flashing and engineering responsibility.
  3. Weather basis: wind/snow documentation and required operational position during severe weather.
  4. Drainage: integrated components, discharge location and maintenance access.
  5. Utilities: power circuit, controls, lights, heaters, shades, fans and trenching.
  6. Completion: permits, assembly, debris removal, touch-up, disturbed-surface restoration and warranty service.
